“Pain is the most prominent symptom of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis,” it said.
“In osteoarthritis, the joints may feel achy and tender, but they might not look very swollen or feel warm [the way joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis do].
“There may be more swelling after physical activity, and more swelling as the condition becomes more advanced.
“The hands are a common site for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, but the conditions tend to target different joints within the hands.”
Meanwhile, you could also be at risk of arthritis if you develop unexplained joint pain or restricted movement.
Your joints may also feel warm to the touch, and the surrounding skin may appear red and inflamed.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis to be diagnosed in the UK – around nine million people are believed to have osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis, meanwhile, is an auto-immune disease that has been diagnosed in about 400,000 individuals.
You could lower your risk of arthritis symptoms by making just a few changes to your daily life.
Certain foods have been claimed to protect against arthritis flare-ups, for example.
Look out for anti-inflammatory foods – including citrus fruit and turmeric – as inflammation is a key cause of arthritis pain.
