According to the Mayo Clinic, stomach bloating can be caused by a variety of factors.

Some of the most common causes of bloating are eating or drinking gassy carbonated foods, stress or anxiety and in some cases, conditions like Coeliac disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

Registered dietician, Gabrielle Mancella at Orlando Health said: “Bloating can also stem from too much salt, hormones, overeating or an imbalance of electrolytes.” How can bloating be solved?

According to experts, getting the recommended amount of sleep could do wonders for bloating.

Dietician, Tamara Freeman said: “Many people find that overnight sleep provides a bit of a ‘reset’ when it comes to food-related bloating.

“Having eight or more hours with nothing going into the GI tract allows for the intra-bowel contents to be whittled down a bit and for bloating to subside.”

Benefits of sleep

Getting enough good sleep is important for everyone, but it is especially important for those living with chronic disorders such as gastrointestinal issues like bloating.

Lack of quality sleep can impact the digestive system. Conversely, symptoms of bloating can also impact the quality of one’s sleep.

It’s also advised that once in bed, help relieve any tension and get the digestive system working by doing a few stretches.

Bringing the knees into the stomach and hugging them to you, followed by twisting of the legs from side to side, can help not only the bloating feeling but also for any mild discomfort caused by the bloating.

Foods and drinks to avoid

What a person eats and drinks is often at the source of the bloating problem.

It’s strongly advised to try and cut out or at least limit foods that are high in fat, gas-producing foods, coffee and fizzy drinks, citrus fruits, tomatoes or spicy foods, chewing gum or hard candy, certain medications that could upset the tummy and alcohol or smoking.

It’s important to try and build some good habits such as eating slower, buying more high-fibre foods, exercising between meals and learning to relax more.

Yakult is a fermented drink that was founded by Japanese scientist, Dr Shirota, who in the 1930s selected and cultivated Lactobacillus casei Shirota.

Probiotics such as L. casei are generally considered safe and potentially helpful in regulating the digestive system.
